Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, commonly known as Brighton, is an English professional football club located in the city of Brighton and Hove. They currently compete in the Premier League, the highest tier of the English football league system. The club plays its home matches at the Falmer Stadium, a 31,800-capacity venue situated in Falmer, northeast of Brighton. Established in 1901 and nicknamed the "Seagulls" or "Albion," Brighton initially participated in professional football in the Southern League before gaining election to the Football League in 1920. Their most notable period of success occurred between 1979 and 1983 when they played in the First Division and reached the 1983 FA Cup Final, narrowly losing to Manchester United after a replay. Unfortunately, they were relegated from the First Division in the same season. Facing financial difficulties in the late 1990s, Brighton found themselves in the fourth tier of English football. However, a boardroom takeover saved the club from liquidation after narrowly avoiding relegation to the Conference in 1997. Subsequent promotions in 2001 and 2002 propelled Brighton back to the second tier. In 2011, the club finally settled into the Falmer Stadium, ending a 14-year period without a permanent home ground. Their fortunes continued to rise, and in the 2016-17 season, Brighton finished second in the EFL Championship, securing promotion to the Premier League and ending a 34-year absence from the top flight. Furthermore, in the 2022-23 season, Brighton achieved their highest-ever top-flight finish by placing sixth in the Premier League, earning qualification for the UEFA Europa League. This marks the club's first venture into European competition.
